Saluting Battery in Valletta

The Saluting Battery is a row of cannons, located along the defense walls of Valletta.  

It is possible that this Saluting Battery is the oldest in the world. For last 500 years Saluting Battery defended Valletta from the sea side.

Since 1820, a cannon shot was fired every day exactly at 12:00. For a long time this tradition was forgotten, but now it has been renewed.

Every day at 12.00 and 16.00 cannon make one shot. Before the shot there is a small show, it starts at 11.45. First, the presenter entertains the audience by telling various interesting facts. After it the soldier loads two cannons. Second cannon is loaded in case of a misfire of the first one.  

Ticket price

  • Adults: € 3 (with audio guide)
  • Children under 16 years: € 1 (accompanied by an adult).

Those who purchased tickets can watch the ceremony in the immediate vicinity. The rest can do the same for free from the balcony above. In this case, it is advisable to come a little in advance to take convenient places. The view from above is also excellent.

How to get 

The salute battery is located in the center of Valletta, next to the Upper Barrakka Gardens. First you need to get to the Valletta's Central bus station. There is a short distance walk (approximately 5-10 minutes) from the bus station till the Saluting Battery.
