The Barcelona Aquarium (L’Aquarium de Barcelona) is one of the largest oceanariums in Europe. Foundation date: September 8, 1985.
The building of the aquarium contains 35 different aquariums, 11,000 animals which belongs to 450 different species. The main aquarium contains 3.7 million liters of salt water, its diameter is 36 meters and depth is 5m. One of the main features of this aquarium is a transparent underwater tunnel, which is more than 80 meters long. Visitors have the opportunity to stand on a moving belt and observe the marine life.
The oceanarium is home to many different species of fish, for example, moray eels, ocean sunfish, rays and two types of shark: the sand tiger shark (Carcharias taurus) and the sandbar shark (Carcharhinus plumbeus).
The aquarium offers some additional services, for example, diving with sharks is available here for additional fee.
On the second floor of the aquarium there is a zone called Planeta Aqua. This is a cognitive zone in which you can study the life of many creatures that have adapted to the most diverse water conditions: severe frost, darkness, and depth.
Another aquarium territory called Explora! Zone, more designed for children. More than 50 interactive elements are located in this area. There children can touch, see, listen, explore and discover nature. The main purpose of this zone is to raise children's awareness of the marine world.
Opening times
The Barcelona Aquarium is open all year round. It opens at 10 a.m, closing time depends on the season:
- 10.00 a.m - 7.30 p.m working days November-March
- 10.00 a.m - 8.00 p.m working days in April, May, October, weekends November-March
- 10.00 a.m - 8.30 p.m weekends in April, May, October
- 10.00 a.m - 9.00 p.m all days from June to September
There are exceptions, for example, New Year holidays, school holidays, etc. Convenient job calendar available on the official website.
Ticket offices close one hour before the closure of the aquarium.
