The monument to Johan Wilhelm Snellman in Helsinki is located in the city center, next to the Bank of Finland.
Johan Vilhelm Snellman is a political and public figure in Finland, a writer and a journalist.
As Minister of Finance in 1865, Snellman was responsible for introducing the national Finnish currency, the mark, so the statue was placed in front of the Bank of Finland on the street that bears his name.
The Snellman Memorial was created by the famous Finnish sculptor Emil Wikström. The plaster model of the monument was completed in 1915, but due to the war, fundraising for its installation was delayed and monument was opened only in 1923.
Architect Gottlieb Eliel Saarinen designed the statue's pedestal.
