How to get to / from Malta airport

By bus

From the airport of Malta, buses X1-X4, TD2, TD3, night bus N71 go to different parts of the island.

  • On the X1 you can get to the farthest point of the island - Cirkewwa, on the way the bus also stops in Msida (Msida), Pembroke (Pembroke), Mellieha (Mellieha)
  • At X2 you can get to Msida, Sliema and St. Julian
  • At X3 you can get to the city of Mosta, Rabat, Bugibba.
  • At X4 you can get to the capital - Valletta (Valletta).

Faster, "direct" buses (fewer intermediate stops):

On TD2 you can get to St. Julians (San Ġiljan), this is a circular route. First bus from the airport is at 04:30, last - at 00:30.
At TD3 you can get to a place called Bugibba, which is a circular route. First bus from the airport is at 04:00, last - at 00:00.
If you have a travel card - you can safely take a bus with the number TD2-TD3, but if you are going to buy a one-time ticket - keep in mind that buses with a TD prefix are more expensive than usual, as they travel faster / without many intermediate stops (see prices below).

The main airport route stops are:

TD2 Airport - San Ġiljan - Spinola - Balluta - Chalet - Ferries 3 - Airport
TD3 Airport - Pijunier - Sajf   - Buġibba Terminus - Arznell -  Wileġ  - Airport
X1 Cirkewwa - Marfa - Mellieha - Xemxija - San Pawl il-Bahar - Qawra - Bahar ic-Caghaq - Pembroke - Mater Dei Hospital - Msida - Marsa - Luqa – Airport
X2 San Giljan - Sliema - Gzira - Mater Dei Hospital - Msida - Marsa - Paola - Luqa – Sta. Lucija - Airport

In addition to special buses to the airport, there are several regular routes to different points of Malta:

  • 117: Mater Dei - Mqabba (airport is not a final stop, be careful and consider the final direction of the bus).
  • 119: Ajruport - Marsaxlokk - Marsaskala
  • 201: Rabat - Ajruport.
  • 135: Marsaskala - Mater Dei (airport is not a final stop, be careful and consider the final direction of the bus).

Night route N71

Bus N71 runs at night on the route St. Julian’s / San Giljan / Il-Marsa / Hal Luqa / Hal Kirkop / Iz-Zurrieq / Il-Qrendi / L-Imqabba / Hal Farrug / Hal Qormi. The route is circular, returns to St. Julian’s.

Buses N71 do not run every night, but only in the night from Friday to Saturday and from Saturday to Sunday. Interval between buses is 30 minutes. First bus leaves from St. Julian’s at 23:15. Last is at 3:15.

Stops for those buses are to the right of the exit from the airport building:

There are 3 bus stops: Airport 1, Airport 2 and Airport 3.

  • Airport 1: X4.
  • Airport 2: X1, X2, X3, TD2, TD3, N71.
  • Airport 3: 117, 119, 135, 201, X4.

Cintra stop

A bit far away there is a stop called Cintra, buses 71, 72, 73, 117, 201, 218 depart from it.

There is a short walk from the airport to the Cintra stop: approx. 5-10 minutes. Two stops with the names Cintra are located almost opposite each other. Be careful to choose the right stop, based on the direction of traffic (it is worth considering that Malta has left-hand traffic).

Routes 71, 72, 73 go to Valletta.

  • 71, 73: Valletta - Zurrieq
  • 72: Valletta - Qrendi
  • 117, 218: Mater Dei - Mqabba (doesn’t stop in Valletta, 117 also stops at the airport)
